WWGS Spaniel AV Trial Results

The Wiltshire Working Gundog Society held its 2nd spaniel field trial of the 2019/20 season

The novice AV trial was held at Minterne Estate Dorset but kind permission of Lord Digby and the head Keeper Paul Marsh.  As was our Cocker trial last year the weather was very unkind with strong westerly winds and light misty drizzle, that doesn’t look much, but soon lets you know whether your new coat is waterproof or not!

As usual Paul had done his upmost to get lots of game into the area of the trial and for the people that don’t know Minterne Estate it has a wide valley running through the village and in the base of the Valley in has a long stretch of woodland probably running for 1 or 2 miles and averaging 150 mts wide and a chalk stream runs alongside and through the woodland.

Being in the bottom of the steep rolling chalk Dorset hills, this woodland is quite damp and boggy in places and has a real mixture of cover that will hold pheasant’s woodcock even an odd rabbit.

The cover is a bit of everything from white grass woodland sedge, patches of bramble lots of fallen trees and branches even some areas of thick bamboo and a huge release in the middle.

One of our Judges described it as some proper spaniel ground it’s not easy as many field trial winning and even some field trial champion spaniels over the last few years have found out from the open trials that have been held there.

As you can see from the amount of awards the judges gave out, the novice dogs did very well on a cold damp day but despite the weather I was grateful to all the competitors that took the trouble to say at end of the trial how much they enjoyed the day.

So a Big Thank you from myself and the Wiltshire to Paul and his team for allowing us to test our dogs out in Minterne woodland especially Marcus for keeping us all going the right direction also I ought to mention Pauls team of guns he provided did a superb job

John Crawford and Jeff McAndrew two proper spaniel men judged the trial and as always it was a pleasure to be there company and their positive judging that also that helped make the day a huge success.

Thankyou to Team Wiltshire and  my band of helpers, you know who you are ,I am so pleased our trials are continuing in way that Jill Selwood ran them over the last decade! A hard person and high standard to follow..
