Things didn’t look hopeful at the start of the week preceding this year’s spring test. It was raining cats & dogs, all the fields and woodland were saturated. With only two dogs entered in the open and 9 in the novice I was thinking we might have to cancel or postpone this year’s test.
On the Tuesday morning only one entry arrived in the post, I said to my wife “It looks like I will have to cancel!“. She said, “Well just remember that it was a bank holiday weekend and the post may be slow.“. She recommended that I hold off that decision until after the post man has been on Wednesday.
Well on this occasion she was right and indeed the post man did arrive with a few more. We also were very lucky with the weather, a drying wind on the Saturday helped dry things up a bit and Sunday, the day of the test, was fine but not that warm, ideal for the dogs.
Ian Flint and Andy Fisher did a good job with the hunt up in woodland, the dogs were hunting in pairs with a shot fired and a seen retrieve each. All the dogs were judged on their hunting, then given a separate mark for the seen retrieve.
This year’s spring test we did in same manner as the WWGS cold game test that we do in the autumn, in that all the competitors have two more tests to complete before they can put their dog back in the car.
I do try and change things around a bit so no jump, or water this year, but a blind retrieve up ride in the woodland. Sounds simple I know, but when the dog had picked the dummy and had started on its way back to his handler, a fir covered dummy that had been attached to elasticated rope was shot across the ride in front of the dog.
Andy Falkner judged this in the morning with Andy Fisher doing the open in the afternoon. Thanks also must be given to Kim Barns and Paddy Williams who also helped me set this up. And yes I did try it out on my young dog; and yes she did make a right pigs ear of it; but I think we all enjoyed this one as a change.
The final test for the dogs was a seen retrieve but this time in to some heavier cover, judged by Bristol & West spaniel FT secretary, Helen Clark.
A huge thankyou to all four judges that gave up there Sunday, along with Karen Pinker, Ray Titchener, Peter Amor, Jill Selwood and Jo Yates
Once again a successful test, I also wanted to thank the people that took the time to send messages of thanks to myself, all of the helpers and the judges, it does make it all worth doing.
