Open Retriever Working Test at Home Farm, Calne 22nd March 2105
The Open this year was held at Home Farm near Calne on March 22nd by kind permission of our host Mr. David Tyler. A new venue for the club and what wonderful grounds we were privileged to enjoy. Set high on a hill just outside the pretty village of Heddington and surrounded by glorious views Mike Brown and Kelvin Selway did a great job of judging some good dogs over 5 tests with the support of an invaluable team of helpers – Roger, Paul, Matt, Martin, Michael, Ian and Becks along with Peter and Marion they created a day which ran well with a good friendly atmosphere from start to finish. My thanks must go to all of them for making the day a success.
I cannot let this one pass though without a special thank you to Kelvin, Roger and Paul for all the hard work they put in with the preparations before. Setting the tests, putting out signs, ‘please do not drive over the edge of the hill’ safety fencing and organising the loan of not one but TWO porta loos (very kindly provided by Paul’s son Matthew) – I am afraid we just could not resist using the steps as our ‘awards podium’. Paul even cooked breakfast for us !! Such luxuries we are not used to but they were very much appreciated by everyone. Finally to Martin, for making the journey to kindly bring the shop but who loved the scenery so much is now thinking of moving to the area – I may need to send an apology to his wife Marilyn for this potential bombshell !
Test 1: A double seen at distance.
Test 2: Double blind. The first on the side of a ridged valley with the second further back.
Test 3: A seen with distraction.
Test 4: Blind. Dogs were asked to go up through a valley, stop and take direction to the right where the dummy was placed on the side of the hill in light cover.
Test 5: Seen to shot from the top of a hill into the valley but a blind was required first at an angle on the opposite side of the valley.
With some good scores at the end of the competition we had a run off for 2nd and 3rd place as well as 4th and a COM. For this test dogs needed to negotiate a gully to a blind retrieve further up the hill.
The WWGS would like to thank our sponsors Skinners Pet Foods for their continued support of all our events this year.
